Welcome to Mrs. Swan's 2nd Grade Class
Dear Parents and Students of Room 13 & 16,
I want to personally welcome you to the 2015 school year, the 2nd grade, and Room 16 at Alexander Science Center.
My name is Deborah Swan and I am entering into my 21st year of teaching, eight of which was as an instructional coach for the state of California. Prior to becoming an educator I was an Aerospace Engineer for 20 years. I helped to build the first space shuttle, and I also worked as a Senior Engineer for Mattel Toys. I have a Master’s Degree and two specialized literacy credentials in addition to my teaching credential. This is my first year at Alexander and I am excited to have joined this team. I am a native Angeleno, and have raised 3 children. The youngest is attending California State Dominguez Hill .
I have had many great experiences as an educator. One highlight of my career was being selected and recognized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as an outstanding educator last year. I was honored along with 6 other educators at a black tie gala in Washington, D.C. Another highlight is being one of three founders of the Black Wings Children’s Museum that opened in October 2012 on the Windsor Hills campus.
I feel that teaching your child is a blessing, as well as a tremendous responsibility. I will do my best to ensure that each student has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom. We are partners in the learning process for your child and your role in this partnership is crucial.
You may be wondering how to assist your child during the school year. The first step is being prepared for the beginning of the school year. The following recommendations and actions will help make the initial days of instruction go smoothly:
- Have student’s name written clearly on jackets/personal items. (Lunch boxes, water bottles, backpacks, etc.)
- Wear comfortable, athletic, closed toe shoes daily to be prepared for P.E. No glitter on shoes!
- At home create a learning space: to do homework, keep homework papers to review, and to do daily reading.
- Have a dictionary and thesaurus available for home study. (Critical)
- Uniforms are requested.
- **The following supplies are needed for school,
- 1 Composition notebooks (Also 99cent store.)
- Box of baby wipes. (Critical for iPad and computer usage)
- Yellow highlighter
Ø Glitter or items containing glitter
Ø Mechanical pencils
Ø Pencil sharpeners
Ø Personal pencils (I will supply them)
Ø Personal crayons (I will supply them)
Ø Large notebooks (No room in desk!)
Ø Toys are not allowed and will be confiscated!!!!!
You can access information about our language arts program, special projects and forms used in class by going to this web site. I will give you a letter about how to connect to the web page for the MyMath very soon.
Cell phones may not be on during class hours and must be stored in your child’s backpack. Cell phones will be confiscated if this LAUSD regulation is violated.
In line with national changes to nutrition requirements for children, products containing processed sugar will not be allowed in class and will be sent back home. Please send nutritious and healthy snacks to school. In line with this change, we celebrate birthdays in class with singing instead of sugar-based products being served, i.e. no cupcakes, cakes, and/or ice cream. This is my policy and reflects my care for your child in conjunction with the research I have read. Speak to me about alternatives.
If you have any questions or concerns, send a note with your child in the morning, call the school; or set up a conference. Please remember to complete and return the survey that was sent home..

P.S. We always need extra boxes of Kleenex and white board markers.
